Zond 5 Space rocket

Zond was a stripped down Soyuz, the spherical orbital module was deleted. Zond was an attempt at a 2 man lunar flyby before the US. A Proton rocket was modified with an escape system to carry the craft into space. A crew was ready to go on a lunar loop round mission but the attempt was scratched at the last minute as a safe recovery couldn't be guaranteed. An unmanned Zond was almost lost in testing and landed in the Indian ocean. Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev have been mentioned as the crew.

And if they (the manufacturers of the Proton rocket) do decide to make a reusable rocket plane, can it be named after me.

Could they make the Proton Rocket into a reusable rocket cargo plane? They could add another equal set of engines on the front of the rocket to slow it down when it lands, as well as some wings. It could also possibly hover and land vertically like the lunar lander or land / glide horizontally like the space shuttle. This would make cross country flights faster and be a way to reuse the rocket and its engines more times.

This might be a Proton failure in Sept 1967 when a first stage engine failed....don't have the time but the drifting vehicle might be indicative of such a failure plus the flash just after liftoff?

Very true, but remember that launch vehicles can be modified for a certain purpose. For example, the engines ca be modified for throttling capabilities; or a different flight profile in order to achieve a certain level of Gs. Usually, like you said, Proton is used for unmanned payload. Probalby there were only one or two flights carrying the Zond.

the main question is-why was it drifting so prominently? ...was it launched in high winds or was it having problems because of unbalanced thrust or was there another reason?

Awesome footage, they tested the crew escape pod with this one. Intended for a Russian lunar ride :-)

thats not the point. The point is that, with that much drifting, the rocket propulsion systems were utilized and the launch of rocket went phenomenal.

That doesn't look like a very good launch, there's a drift to the left.

Rare. The Proton booster carrying the Zond would have been a pretty rough ride G-Force wise. Normally used for heavy components like Salyut and ISS station modules. About 1967-68 or so. Thanks for posting.
